February is certainly starting full-out, isn’t it? So far we’ve had unexpected Spring storms, tornadoes and floods in winter, Mardi Gras, a coast to coast Primary election for US President, a new Moon, the beginning of Lent and a partial solar eclipse. Whew!
I’m planning an organic garden. Two of my MN neighbors and I are going to work together. The seeds must definitely be non-genetically manipulated! I’m really tired of Monsanto trying to convince the world that those hybrid seeds are pestilent-proof. All they do is make the pests stronger and more wiley to win. Some of the seeds have animal genes in them now. Most importantly, seeds saved from those plants will NOT germinate. That’s right… they will not grow again.
Monsanto claims the plants do not cross-pollinate with non-hybrid plants, but that’s not true either. Agriculture departments in every state where these plants are growing have proof that the other plants are being contaminated with the genetically altered pollen. The wind does what it does, you know?
For example: if you’ve ever planted popcorn at your Grandpa’s farm, you had to make sure it was planted far, far away from the regular corn crop for the same reason. The wind does what it does…!
The thing is, I don’t think it’s funny anymore. Not since I realized that farmers all over the globe, particularly in Third World countries who are accustomed to saving seeds from year to year, are either discovering their seeds won’t grow so they cannot feed their family or make a living, or that they must go into debt to purchase new seed and the fertilizer it requires to grow. No wonder some Green Peace members call the company’s tactics terrifying as they hold the world’s food supply hostage.
So you can understand why I must carefully make the seed choices. I’m also delighted to discover there are three farms in the vicinity that provide grass-fed meat and open range fowl for sale. Ever taste a bison burger? Delicious!
One of my decisions at the new year was to finish the task of creating Golden Birthday quilts for my seven grandchildren. I figured I should do it while I still felt like it. Now that they are all complete I’ll put them into the care of the parents. If I’m still around as each special birthday arrives, then I’ll give the gift to them myself; if I’m not, then “Happy Golden Birthday, grandchild!”
You remember that a Golden Birthday is that once in a lifetime event when your birth day matches your birth year; i.e., She will be 17 years old on the 17th.
I’m thinking about starting an advice blog and I’d appreciate your feedback, please. Do you like the idea of “Dollar Sense”? While raising my family I mastered how to stretch food and money, and how to make something out of nothing! I'd like to share the information.

Hi Joan,
If you know of people who want to help a wounded Marine, I can give you a heads up. My son, Seth, married Kristina in July of 2007. Seth was in Iraq for seven months (until March). A car bomb exploded in his face in January. He suffered 1st degree burns on his face, severe brain trauma, and a 3rd degree concussion. As a result he has Post Concussion Syndrome, a speech impediment, partial hearing loss, unbalanced equilibrium, neck and back issues, and short-term memory issues. He also has severe Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Seth has been traveling back and forth between Camp Pendleton and San Diego for physical and speech therapy. He sees various doctors and specialist five days a week. Due to all this travel, Seth and Kristina have been left financially destitute. They were evicted from their apartment last Friday. He's having trouble getting help because he doesn't have a disability you can see with your eyes, though his injuries are consistent with what most of our troops receive over there.
